Developing a Design Framework for UMI Educational Scenarios presented at the 1st Hellenic Conference

The 1st Hellenic Conference “Innovating STEM Education” [HISTEM 2016] was held in Athens, 16-18 December 2016, co-organized by the University of Patras, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Hellenic Open University, Greek Ministry of Education, Research & Religious Affairs, General Secretariat of Research & Technology, Hellenic Association of ICT in Education, and the Union of Greek Physicists.

At the event Dr. Olga Fragou, a member of the UMI project consortium from CTI, presented a research paper “Developing a Design Framework for UMI Educational Scenarios” authored by O. Fragou, A.D. Kameas and I. Zaharakis. The paper was a part of a thematic session on UMI technologies and STEM also chaired Dr. Olga Fragou.


The main goals of this volume of the HISTEM conference included the promotion of a multidisciplinary approach of STEM Education concepts and processes as well as triggering of an exchange of best practices in STEM aimed at inspiring primary and secondary school teachers in Greece to reflect on and exchange innovative practices.

Dr. Fargou’s presentation began with an outline of major trends in innovative pedagogy.  In the next section, a presentation on ubiquitous learning, or U Learning, was given and UMI technologies were described in a STEM methodology context. Furthermore, the fundamental principles for developing innovative instructional design tools for U learning and STEM were discussed.  The core section, continued with a detailed presentation of the methodology proposed for U Learning Educational Scenario Design as well as the application of the methodology as a case study, namely in a UMI-Sci-Ed CTI Educational Scenario for 14-16 youngsters aiming at teaching cryptography primitives. The last section was dedicated to conclusions and future actions. At the end of the presentation, the audience had the chance to ask questions and additional information on the research paper.
