This summer, the preliminary work done by the UMI-Sci-Ed partnership will begin to be implemented through the first UMI pilots. Our educational materials and kits will be launched at a summer camp in Ireland and in classrooms in Finland this August. The training techniques are built around the Arduino platform and Communities of Practice methodologies. Here the results of the pilots will be gathered and local Communities will start forming. Thus, eventually identifying as many common features in all levels for all participating schools in all countries, so as to form the foundation for a globally applicable practice improving education and interest in STEM careers everywhere thanks to UMI technologies.
The UMI method is based on the principle of “learning by doing”. In this method, the students perform constructive activities in natural condition. It demands work from the students for designing and implementing UMI technologies and STEM. The basic steps of the project method are 1) creating situation, 2) selection of the problem, 3) planning, 4) execution, 5) evaluation, 6) reporting and recording, and 7) final presentation.
In Ireland the UMI method will be implemented during an Enterprise Summer camp for 14-16 year olds. In a creative, innovative and inspirational environment, the participating students will be encouraged to build their creative confidence and to explore their potential in entrepreneurial and other soft skills. Among others, the camp will include makerspace activities that use ‘making’ to develop prototypes (including collaboration on designing and making) that solve a problem in a specific domain (e.g. a technology problem in the school environment). Specifically, within this element of the camp, UDO methods and kit will be used.
In Finland, school starts in mid-August. The pilot there will be launched at the Viikki Teacher Training School, which will involve 20 students in this first course.
